Kalin flew with all of the speed he could muster. The bokoblin archers turned their aim on the Moldugas, giving him a moment’s respite. He hoped the cost of that opening wouldn’t be the lives of the caravanners. The moblin guarding the Talus’s ore deposit still held its shield, but it was unsteady on its feet.
Kal came in talons first, delivering two quick kicks to the shield with all of his momentum behind them. He landed in front of the beast as it staggered, flailing the shield wildly, and pulled his spear out. He thrust forward before the moblin could fully recover, burying the spearhead in the monster’s gut. The moblin looked down at the spear in shocked disbelief, then back up at Kalin.
Then it smashed Kal across the side of his head with its giant wooden shield.
Lights swam in Kal’s vision as he landed flat on his back. His eyes glazed over for a moment but he forced them to refocus on the moblin looming over him. The monster attempted to pull the spear out but seemed to think better of it. It raised the heavy shield over its head, preparing to slam it down on Kal’s head. It seemed confused to see that the Rito wasn’t looking up at his impending doom. He was instead looking at its left knee, and at the arrow sticking out of it.
He kicked the moblin’s knee as hard as he could muster. It howled with pain and stumbled backward. Kalin scrambled to his feet and wrenched his spear from the creature’s gut. Before it could recover, he thrust again, aiming for the throat this time. The moblin’s screams turned to gurgling as the spear pierced its throat. The body disintegrated into a foul dust, leaving only his spear where there had been.
The scaffolding he was standing on shifted dangerously as the Talus reared back for another throw. He could see the caravan rounding the bend in the road. They wouldn’t make it in time. Kal switched to his bow and launched into the air. He flew as fast as he could, his desperate wingbeats bringing him further into the air… but not fast enough. The Talus was going to throw, and he realized that he did not have time to get out of the blast zone.
“So be it.”
Kal shot the bomb arrow straight down at the Talus’s core. A deafening explosion racked the Talus. The bokoblin archers were thrown violently as the scaffolding splintered, burned, and collapsed. Kal did not get a chance to see what had happened to the core, as the shockwave hit him a second later.
He got lucky, relatively speaking, as he hit a tree as he was thrown by the blast. The branches whipped violently across his face, chin, and wings as he hurtled through them. It hurt like hell, but it slowed him down. He dropped to the ground about 30 meters away from the Talus, beaten up and bleeding from a hundred shallow cuts, but alive and- to his surprise- conscious.

The Moblin's shield took most of the bomb blast, but it splintered in the process, leaving the creature on its last legs as it sprawled to the ground. Bek and Al rode past, each firing arrows into the creature and putting it out of their misery for good. The Bokoblins scattered around the stunned Talus, two of them landing in front of the boss. The other landed near Al and Bek. The three of them were more than mere nuisances. Their bows would allow them to take potshots at the fleeing caravanners, and hinder the Molduga's recovery operations. The objective was clear: Every last one had to go. Rania rode alongside the two Bokos that the explosion had left in her care, expertly throwing a few knives to stun them while she dismounted, drawing one of her swords. Her horse continued to run off on its own while she faced down the creatures.
Keeping them in a line so the one further back couldn't shoot without risking his buddy was the easy part, but getting through their thick hides was proving much more difficult. She kept slashing, and the creature kept screaming at her and trying to draw its bow, unperturbed. At least they weren't any smarter. Using an old trick, she ran one of her sword up the creature's nostril and tripped it, sending it to the ground. Thankfully, they weren't much heavier, either. As Rania cut the string of the creature's bow, the Boko in back took advantage and readied its own. Rania reacted mechanically, lifting the creature as a shield once again. Enraged, the other Bokoblin charged the short distance between them, lowering his head so the savage three-pronged horn would arrive first. The first Boko began to struggle more fiercely, aiming a punch at her head. Rania slashed the creature's hand away before grabbing it by the ears. Using the ears to control it, she pulled the creature in a wide arc, shoving its head down as she brought it around to gather some speed. The horn's elaborate design worked against itself as the creatures locked themselves together. Rania made note of this as she thrust her sword full force into the Bokoblin's lower back. Her other hand kept the creatures together as long as she could while repeatedly stabbing the creature until skin broke and blood began to spill. Getting deeper, her sword finally struck something vital. Death released the Bokos as the first exploded into a puff of smoke. The remaining monster didn't stand a chance in single combat against the caravan's boss, and she began to prove this by disarming it with a quick swipe to its weapon hand.
Bek and Al saw the boss fight on despite the Talus' disabling, and knew their assignment. Bek dismounted his horse, and twisted the remaining black Bokoblin's bow to trip it up and send it falling. He pulled his dagger and began to viciously stab the creature as it struggled to free itself. After a sustaining a few cuts, it managed to land a kick on Bek that upset his balance enough for the creature to throw him off. It attacked him with a furious series of punches, one landing on Bek's head, and another landing in his gut. The Talus shook itself from its stupor and took notice of the struggle. Caring little for either party, it prepared another throw, only for an arrow to graze its core. "You're after me, you ugly boulder!" Al called to the golem as he drew another shot. The Talus obliged and threw its arm his way instead, but Al deftly maneuvered his spotted black horse out of the way, and the boulder crashed into the ground with a massive thud, but not much effect.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five. One injured, one stunned, and three closing in. Just as he began to react to the closest one, the Goron warrior slammed his full weight into the farthest. It went flying, far enough that it could be taken out of the count for now. Four was much easier. Malachi continued his assault by redirecting the closest Blue into the one stuck in the ground. It tripped, and Malachi pounced on it, making sure to step on the stuck Boko to keep it stuck while he robbed the tripped Bokoblin of its sight with two quick stabs to its beady red eyes. He must have hit something important in the process, because the creature turned black and exploded shortly after as he parried another attack. Only four left now, yet despite their dwindling odds they remained as bold as ever.
This seemed to suit the guard just fine. The stuck Boko managed to free itself, but Malachi immediately set upon it with a hail of precise strikes. A strike to the nose, a quick stab to the throat, a kick in the right knee, and another stab in the gut. In an impressive finishing move, Malachi grabbed the creature's ear, used it to guide its face into his knee before pulling it into a shoulder carry and throwing it towards Rolaka. The seasoned pit-fighter would know exactly what to do with it, and Malachi felt free to pivot his focus to the previously-injured Boko with a series of fast dagger strikes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The caravan neared the tree that Kal had managed to land in, and as far as they were concerned, it was all according to the old bird's plan. They couldn't all afford to stop and check on him, but the grey-eyed Hylian from before rode near the tree, sending a few arrows toward Al and Bek's side to bolster their attack. "Are you alright, sir?" He cried over the din of the battle.
The remaining wagon thundered past behind him, still aiming to get out of danger as quickly as possible. Just when they thought they were clear, another threat revealed itself. A herd of five Red Bokoblins, five Blues, and a much larger greenish-brown Bokoblin stepped out to block the road. The large one was particularly noteworthy. He was three times as tall as the others, and about three times as wide besides. Rather than carry swords and shields as the normal ones did, he wore a pair of sinister-looking claw weapons. His face was partially obscured by a mask made of steel plate beaten into the shape of a skull, though at a distance it was easy to miss the fact that the metal teeth and lower jaw were no mere adornments. The driver's reaction was admirable as they moved as far to the edge of the blockade as possible.
The sight of the raid's massive leader send Klad into a rage. "YOU!" He remembered the brute from an attack he'd launched on the Goron's home several years ago. It was all the motivation he needed to curl into a ball and send himself rolling towards the entire blockade. Bound by their contract, the Moldugas followed him while raining arrows toward their attackers. Though he wanted to join them, fear seemed to have a grip on the young Boka, who remained with the wagon as it aimed to break through the side of the blockade. The raid boss bellowed a hearty laugh and stepped forward to meet the rolling Klad and his backup head-on, while his minions went to intercept the caravan.

Rolaka caught the Bokoblin thrown by Malachi and, in a fluid motion, power slammed it into the earth, reducing it to a puff of smoke. The other Bokos did not fare any better as the Goron tanked their blows and countered in kind. A thick black residue was forming on Rolaka's gauntlets as he pummeled and walloped the two Bokoblins assailing him. His focus was solely on these monsters. He did not register the events which happened around him, not the Rito's bomb arrow nor the Hylian fighting alongside him could shake him from this trance. It was not until his rock-like fist landed in the stomach of the final Bokoblin and the ensuing dust cloud did he take notice of what had transpired.
Rolaka turned his head back to the caravan... and saw him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Klad barreled at the bandit leader with a fierceness. He had been there when this massive Bokoblin had originally attacked their armed escort years ago, and again when Dodongo's Cavern was raided by the very same forces. A deep-seeded hatred fueled his rolling body as Klad launched himself at the leader. Klad kicked off the ground, uncurled, and brandished the Cobble Crusher all in a few short seconds of airtime. This blow would mark a permanent scar in the face of their enemy... if he had not seen it coming.
The hulking Bokoblin was braced for impact and firmly seized Klad in the air, one pudgy hand on the Crusher, the other caught Klad's shoulder. Before the Goron could struggle, it whirled him around and sent him flying right back at the caravan. A driver gave an emergency signal at the wagons broke formation to just barely give Klad room to land. The leader gave a gruff growl to his forces, the Bokoblins all held up burning torches and waved them madly at the horses. The primal fear of fire took over and the horses immediately reared up, the caravan had been halted...
Boka rushed to his brother's side to help dig Klad out of the furrow in the path he created upon landing. As Klad brushed himself off, Boka locked eyes with the leader, there was no mistaking the monstrous Bokoblin before them.
"King Skulblin!" He cried out.
As if prompted by his name, King Skulblin pulled a large horn from his belt and blew into it. A deep bellow sounded from the other end which caused all of his fiendish forces to cease battle and stand at attention, even the Talus seemed ready to receive orders.
I'm afraid... you are surrounded. He he he he he," the so-called 'King' spoke. His voice was deep, bassy, and somehow smooth for a monster, his cadence was like a low growl bubbling beneath his voice.
"Skulblin, you bastard!" Rolaka shouted out. "Should have known this was you! The monsters are never this coordinated!"
"Ahhhh... if it isn't Rolaka... champion of a rancid hole," Skulblin replied.
"Oh how scathing!" Rolaka sardonically remarked. "Speaking of such, how's your teeth? Ha ha ha ha!"
Skulblin humored them all with a nasty grin. During their first battle years prior, Skulblin had grievously wounded Rolaka, which the Goron paid back by destroying Skulblin's lower jaw and punching out nearly all of his teeth. The monstrous Bokoblin knew some rudimentary metalworking and fashioned himself replacement teeth out of sharpened steel. The lower row was molded from the same hunk of metal as the rest of the jaw, but the upper teeth were individually screwed in at the gums. The result was an unholy mingling of flesh and steel, one which threatened to bleed from any place at any time. No sane man would dare put metal that sharp close to his own mouth, let alone use them as dentures, but King Skulblin was no man, and certainly not sane.
"But... I am not here for you... nor your 'brothers'," Skulblin pointed a bulbous finger at the wagons. "The jewels... and the bracelets... hand them over to us... and you all will live." His beady red eyes locked on Rania. "What say you?... Oh fearless leader..."

"I’m okay, lad," Kalin answered the grey-eyed Hylian, as he dusted himself off. “It’s just, when you reach my age, you begin to realize that you can’t go around blowing yourself up like you used to.”
He took stock of himself. Everything hurt. His old bones ached something fierce, and he was certain a mosaic of bruising and tiny lacerations lay beneath his feathers. That was alright though, he could still fight and fly… which was all that mattered. He grabbed his spear, which had landed nearby, fully intact. By the grace of the Elders, the three feathers had not even been singed. The bow, however, was a different matter. He was not sure if it had been the explosion or the fact that he had landed on it, but it had snapped right in the center of the upper limb.
“However, it would seem that I owe the Molduga’s one longbow,” Kal said showing the blonde Hylian man.
Kalin was about to say something to the effect of “let’s get back out there” when he realized that the battlefield had grown relatively quiet. From their spot to the side and a bit behind the main body of the caravan, they were out of direct line of sight but could see and hear the proceedings.
After listening to the exchange for a moment, Kal had heard enough. He began to form a plan. “Alright lad, welcome to the cavalry.” He said turning to the Hylian. “We’re the only unit not in view of the enemy. King Skulblin thinks he has the Moldugas surrounded, but he’s wrong. He only has most of them surrounded. That leaves us with an important responsibility. We’re the cavalry.“ As he spoke, he took the quiver off of his shoulder and inspected the bomb arrows still inside. Eight arrows left, and the explosive element of each seemed to have faired well during his previous misfortune. Next, he looked the Hylian over. Sturdy lad, medium build, well-muscled. He would be heavy, but Kal was certain he could carry him in flight for at least a short distance. “So here’s the plan…”

Rania pinned the creature by slamming its face into the dirt and shoving throwing knives through the thin skin of its ears. It struggled as its leader spoke his demands. Rania responded by continuing to slash the neck of the creature until it perished, vanishing into a cloud of smoke. She stood up to her full height, but did not step forward so the Talus was still in view. Likewise, Al and Bek kept their bows trained on its core, ready to stun it at a moment's notice. Skulblin had certainly planned this well, but Rania still held an advantage, and she knew it by the way none of the monsters had so much as looked in Kal's direction since their arrival. He was her ace in the hole, now.
"I say you've given us no guarantee that we will survive. Lay down your weapons if you mean to honor this deal. The value of our cargo will be more than enough to replace what you'll surrender." Scanning the battlefield, she took the opportunity to draw up another advantage. Whether this worked or not, having her star pupils at the center of the action would make things much easier. "Have your men toss your weapons toward the center of our battlefield. My soldier will collect them, you can collect the jewels, and we can all leave in one piece." Malachi released the Bokoblin he'd been restraining, and made his way to the center of the battle lines. He knew Kal was in the stand of trees toward the ravine, but didn't even look toward them as he made his way forward. He wondered how big Kal's distraction was going to be.

King Skulblin chuckled at Rania's words, then slowly shook his pudgy head. "Perhaps... you misunderstand. This is no deal... this is a robbery. Heh. Heh. The question is not our weapons... it's your lives." The massive Bulblin took two stomping steps towards his quarry, signaling his monsters to step forward themselves, tightening the circle around everyone and the caravan. "Of course... what can I expect? Such absurdity... is a hallmark of your kind. Gerudo and Gorons... self-righteous creatures you both... and thick in the head. Heh heh."
Rolaka stood seething, he was ready to roll out and shut Skulblin up permanently, but he swore to follow Rania's command for this mission. Skulblin had made a similar ultimatum during their first encounter years ago, which ended with heavy casualties on both sides. Rolaka braced himself for the inevitable repeat of history.
"Once again... You. Are. Surrounded... Relinquish your cargo..." Skulblin flashed his claw gauntlets, "...or DIE!"

A piercing screech, like that of an eagle, fell upon the battlefield from far above. Kalin soared in a wide circle, passing directly over the bokoblin forces. The Hylian, clinging to Kal for dear life, lit the first bomb arrow and dropped it amongst the bokoblins to the Molduga’s rear. Then another, a bit further along, then another. By the time, the first went off, the Hylian was dropping the fifth one directly over King Skulblin’s head. King Skulblin swatted it away just in time but was still staggered when the bomb exploded in the face of one of his subordinates.
All around the Moldugas, the enemy lines exploded, sending monsters (and smaller bits of monster) flying into the air. Others ran about wildly, screeching and on fire. Some lucky ones were only knocked prone and concussed by the blasts.
When all eight of the bombs were spent, Kal landed himself and the Hylian lad behind King Skulblin, opposite Rania, the Goron, and Moldugas. As they came in the Hylian threw himself upon a red bokoblin, and Kal himself assaulted a slightly singed blue one. He delivered two aerial kicks to the bokoblin’s chest before landing. The blue bokoblin recovered quickly and assaulted Kal with a series of unrefined swipes from his shortsword. Kal effortlessly turned each blow away with subtle flourishes of his spear. Before long before the bokoblin began to tire itself out, and then it hesitated for but a moment. Instantly, Kal’s speartip struck out like a viper, and took the bokoblin cleanly through the right eye, in and out. He had already turned away to fight another opponent as the bokoblin began to disintegrate.
The Hylian had already dispatched his own foe, and the Rito met him back to back as bokoblin began to surround them. “Probably doesn’t look like it,” Kal parried a blow as he spoke, “but we've got them right where we want them, lad.” He thrust out in a feint with his spear, and the red bokoblin who dodged the blow had his confidence (and skull) dashed by the kick that followed swiftly after. The bokoblin fell to the ground, dazed. “The more of them we have surrounding us here, the less stand against the Molduga’s charge.” His spear gouged the fallen bokoblin’s throat, but his eyes were already on his next opponent. The monster at his feet convulsed violently, and began to disintegrate. “We’ve done our part.”

In unison, Bek and Al released their arrows and stunned the Talus. It sat back into the earth, and Rania jumped up the monster's rocky body to begin cutting away at the core. A curious creature, the Talus' core appeared to be a rock-hard ore deposit. In reality it was quite vulnerable, and slashes from her swords yielded commendable results. She waved off Al and he rode toward the wagon, swinging wide to pick up Malachi.
"Gonna swing around to the wagon and drop you off. See a weapon you like?" Malachi surveyed the battlefield as though he looking through a pantry, finally pointing to a Bokoblin with a sturdy-looking spear that happened to be locked in combat with the emboldened Boka.
"That guy, next to the client." Without another word, Al expertly positioned the horse alongside the enemy line, and Malachi made his leap, tumbling to his feet. His timing was impeccable. Boka punched the creature back just as Malachi regained his posture, allowing him to deliver a kick to its calves, sending it tumbling to the ground. Malachi set upon it and carved out its throat with his dagger before claiming the spear. "Thanks!" He called to Boka cheerfully before diving headlong into the enemy. His spearpoint became a blur as he employed both ends of the weapon to first trip a Blue Bokoblin before ramming the point up its nose. A red one took offense a lunged in with its shortsword. With a flair and flexibility that seemed out of place in an outfit like Rania's, Malachi delivered a sideways kick high at the creature's jaw, sending it to the ground in a stunned heap as he freed his spear. Before the others could capitalize, his feet were firmly planted again. The wide-eyed look he'd worn since this morning had faded into a more determined glare as the fight went on.
As he fought, the other Moldugas made their move, they charged towards the torchbearers, hoping to get them away from the wagon, but the monster captain had other ideas. He planted himself in front of their horses and bellowed. "No one is taking my prize from me today! Arrows deflected off the crude armor he wore, and the ones that did manage to dig into his arms hardly seemed to faze him.
Breaking through the line to Kal's side, Al made his way toward the torchbearers while the enemy was distracted. His plan was simple, either rout them or defeat them. Of course, he also had to prevent from burning him alive, burning any of the horses, or dropping their torches and starting a wildfire. "Easy." He shot one of the reds in the foot, causing it to hop about in pain, but not release its torch. Before it could regain itself, Al was upon it. Using his small size, he slipped into the creature's grip, shoved a dagger into its arms to release the torch, disarmed it, and slipped out. A prod from the torch set the weaponless Boko running for cover. "One down," he thought. "Only half a dozen to go. Easy..."

Boka beat back Bokoblins as they bore down on the blockaded band. He could not keep proper track of how many assailants there were, seemingly hitting a monster every time he threw his fists. "STAY! BACK! YOU! WRETCHED! THINGS!" he shouted between blows. Boka, while seasoned in the fighting pits, lacked the same battle experience Rolaka and Klad had earned. Never before was he faced with such a dangerous horde, and had only once seen King Skulblin back during the raid on the Cavern. A tenuous ferocity had a hold of the lean Goron, threatening to break if a monster managed a lucky hit.
Klad, meanwhile, was doing his damnedest to keep King Skulblin away from Malachi as the latter was dealing with a torchbearer. His Cobble Crusher gained new scratches and scrapes each time he blocked Skulblin's strikes, necessary to keep that same damage off of himself. Each time the raid boss was about to focus his aggression elsewhere, Klad would smash the Crusher against Skulbin and fill him with renewed hatred for Klad.
"Stubborn stones in the road... the lot of you." the King sneered. "I'll crush you all!" Skulblin blocked Klad's latest swing with one hand then swiftly swiped at his chest. Klad stepped back a second too late and the claw gauntlet cut a light gash across his pectoral. Klad seethed in pain, and before he could retaliate Skulblin had shoulder-charged him and sent him barreling back once more.
"Klad!" Boka cried out. As he swatted away another Bokoblin, Boka made his way over to aid his fellow Goron. He failed, however, to consider the Moblin about to gore him with a spear.
"Boka, stay alert!" Rolaka shouted at he rolled into the Moblin, sending it tumbling rather comically. Boka's relief lasted for only a moment as he spun round and saw King Skulblin slowly advancing toward them. Rolaka picked Klad up from the dirt grabbed Boka by the shoulder, bringing them both in for a huddle, he assessed Klad's wound. "It ain't deep, lick it up and walk it off."
"Easy for you to say," Klad fired back, tightening his grip on his Cobble Crusher.
"Are you hit, Boka?"
"N-no, brother, I- uh..." Boka's breathing was labored. "I've never been in a battle such as this, I'm... worried we may get seriously hurt. We, and the Moldugas. King Skulblin is just.."
"We're already hurt, kid. I got holes in my arms, and Klad's got a piece missing. Skulblin's gotten us both before too, how d'ya think I got this?" He pointed to the long scar on his stomach, his reward for just barely protecting a Hylian diplomat years prior. Rolaka then addressed them both. "And we have a lot more pain in store for us before this is over, nobody's leaving without scars today. But we're Gorons! We're built to last, to withstand, to overcome and keep on rolling! And we have no fear of fire..." Rolaka eyed the torchbearers, Klad and Boka followed his eyes. "You two can smash through them in seconds and put out those flames just by sitting on them. I'll keep him at bay." King Skulbin was nearly upon the Gorons.
"Are you sure, Rolaka?" Boka asked.
"Certain. After all, it'll only be a few seconds, right?" Rolaka gave them a cheeky grin.
"Right. Let's go," Klad broke from Rolaka's grasp and rolled headlong toward the torchbearers with Boka not far behind.
Rolaka turned his gaze back to the hulking brute before him. The Goron and the King sized each other up, then locked eyes in a way that only mutual hatred could achieve. "I have a prize to claim, and now you're here, Rolaka... this day just gets better and better. He he he."
"Only winners deserve prizes, Skulblin. And you haven't beaten me yet, not once!"
"And here I stand. If your intent is to kill me... you have not won yet either."
"My intent is to protect this caravan, its cargo, and crew, but if you're gonna make it personal..." Rolaka crashed his gauntlets together with a clang and assumed a battle-ready stance. While his mission was still at the forefront of his mind, his deep-seeded emotions regarding King Skulblin were beginning to emerge. White-hot anger mixed with an obscene hatred that boiled up within him, his normally rounded face seemingly becoming more angular the more he had to suffer Skulblin's visage.
"He he he... 'personal' is how I like it!" The King brandished his claws once more and flashed a sadistic metallic smile, ready to carve his way through Rolaka's stony hide.
And before a twig could snap or a leaf could fall, the nemeses charged.
------------------------------------
The monsters braced themselves vainly against the living boulders which crashed into them. Lizalfos went sailing, Bokoblins went wailing, with Moblins failing to hold their ground. The Gorons pulverized the weaker creatures and put the larger Moblins at the disadvantage. One lumbering Moblin tried to ward Boka away with the flames, but it only soothed the ever-so-slightly-more-gentle Goron. Klad wrenched away the torches from his fallen foes and snuffed out the fires with his bulbous fingers. With the Talus at Rania's mercy (which was likely absent), and Rolaka battling Skulblin, only a select few Moblins stood in the way of the Caravan and the open road. The wagons needed to continue their movement soon, before the tides were turned against them once more.
