Continuation of "Melancholy of a Target"
Location: Kakariko Village: Potion Shop
Sweet silence swept across Lake Hylia like its own waves. Birds were softly chirping among the trees surrounding the cool, placid waters. The gentle breeze brushed against the grass, and the morning sun tinted the area with a slight blue color as it arose from the horizon. Yet, in all of this beauty and bliss, something was awry. The scenery projected a false safety; even in the colors and light of the morning, a dark horror could unleash itself. The Lakeside Laboratory in the distance seemed harmless, but that peacefulness was merely an illusion. Ganon's minions had usurped the lab from the doctor and replaced him with Ganon's own alchemists and masters of sorcery. Guards were positioned in various spots to guard the secrets inside... secrets that Garen Arthis intended to uncover.
"That bastard lied to me," Garen mumbled as he took in his surroundings. Crouched behind a large rock, he was free to recount the events that led him to this point. During the previous night, Mike was stolen from his hospital bed in Kakariko Village right in front of Garen by Ganon's snatchers. During the pursuit, Garen briefly interrogated one of the criminals who said that Mike was being taken to Ganon's Castle. They must have lied out of fear in order to live... or maybe even send Garen on a wild goose chase to his death. Clever as they were, it didn't stop Garen from tailing the snatcher's caravan on horseback all the way to the lake. "Five guards patrolling on foot, two scouts on the roof, and who knows how many inside," He listed. Too easy, Garen could take on worse odds in his sleep. Assuming his portals protected him from the sorcerers, Garen would have no trouble retrieving his friend.
Garen also took note of the lab itself. For one, it is not very large in size and looked a bit like a house in the rising sun. Another thing he took note of is that it really was a laboratory. If Ganon controls it and Mike is inside, only the goddess know what could be happening in there. Experiments? Torture? Interrogation? The only way to find out for sure was to infiltrate the lab. Stealth and prior knowledge would be of much assistance in this mission, therefore Garen needed to capture a guard and question him, assuming he wouldn't dare lie to Garen.
"I need to remain undetected, if they catch a glimpse of me I'm on my own. I have no backup. They may also try to relocate Mike, letting them do so is not an option. Stay hidden," Garen briefed himself. "Sight tight soldier, I never leave someone behind." Garen waited for the opportune time to cast a portal on the lab's wall without being noticed. The time had come and Garen shot a portal to the left wall of the lab, just behind a guard. He quickly cast a second portal at point blank range on the boulder that concealed him. The two portals linked and Garen could see through the portals. Though the portals were a useful tool for watching others, they worked both ways. Garen would have to limit himself to quick glances.
Without hesitating a single moment, Garen reached around the man-sized portal and seized a guard by the collar. Garen pulled them through and held them by the throat while he snapped his fingers, which caused both portals to dissipate. The guard tried to wriggle free of Garen's grip but to no avail.
Garen peered into his eyes and demanded, "I know you work for Ganon. Tell me what sorcery is being committed in that laboratory."
"Who wants to know?" The guard replied. He didn't seem afraid at all, his pulse was regular and his heart beat did not alter. He was more frustrated that he was captured than he was afraid of the determined warrior holding him hostage.
"The man with the knife to your throat, smart ass." Garen answered. He flicked out his hidden wrist blade, and pointed it at the guard's neck. "Now tell me what atrocities are taking place in that lab. If I sense any falsehood in your voice, I will silence it."
"I am loyal to my lord, you will hear nothing from me."
"You place your loyalty in the hands of my enemy. Therefore, you are my enemy. I kill my enemies, and it is foolish to rebel to me while a blade is inches from your jugular. Now answer or perish."
"Very well, I choose perish... ENEMY SPOTTED!" The guard cried out as he committed suicide by thrusting his own neck into Garen's blade. Garen cursed under his breath and threw the guard off his wrist. The other guards rushed to the scene with their swords brandished. Garen drew his short sword in his right hand and his axe in the other and rushed from the shadows of his cover and stood battle ready before the guards.
The two scouts on the lab's roof armed themselves with bows. Garen was an obvious target in the morning light as the sun shined on him. Plus, his dark maroon-colored clothing stood out against the green grass. The archers cocked an arrow and lined up their shots, and aimed for Garen's head.
