So long had rain poured from the sky, that Eldrin began to wonder if there was ever a condition otherwise. He could barely remember when he had last seen the sun. Lightning tore the sky in half, closely followed by a roar that seemed to shake the very earth beneath him. Eldrin lay on his back, his head rested on his crossed arms. He watched the moisture seeping through the ceiling of his tent. The sales clerk in Clock Town had lied. He said that the canvas of the tent was waterproof, enchanted by a very powerful wizard. Of course, maybe when he stole it the enchantment was broken out of spite. A clever booby trap, "You steal our merchandise, we ruin it!" he imagined the clerk saying... Uppity bastard! He sighed, his eyes trained on a dangling water droplet. It seemed to know he was watching, as it just hung there, tantalizingly. No doubt, it was mocking him, "He's watching me, waiting for me to fall! So I'll just hang here and tease him!" Little did the droplet know, Eldrin knew its plan well, and was prepared to wait it out. He watched it carefully, not willing to let any tricks get by him. Slowly, but steadily his patience began to pay off. The droplet just kept absorbing more moisture. "Fool! It doesn't even suspect that its own gluttony will be its downfall! Literally!" He thought, chuckling inwardly, but showing no emotion. He couldn't allow the droplet to catch on. Though by now it wasn't really a "droplet" but a full grown drop. The drop finally realized, but too late! It hung on desperately, but it's obese body was too much for it to support. Eldrin's heart pounded, excitement boiled up inside of him. For a moment the drop lingered, then it fell. It seemed to take hours, the drop fell gloriously, straight down at Eldrin. The drop struck Eldrin between his eyes, splashing moisture across his face. Eldrin never blinked, a smile curled his lips. Victory was sweet.
At last he stood and stretched luxuriously. He decided that he was going for a walk, rain or not. Though he loved the rain, when he was alone he rarely went out in it, after all, in the cold rain he could hardly harness heat from the atmosphere. This put him at a major disadvantage. Or rather, leveled the playing field. Eldrin usually did his best to avoid fair fights. So without backup he usually avoided rain, and conserved as much heat as possible. Before he left, he dumped the glittering contents of his loot bag onto the ground and slung the bag over his shoulder. He stepped out of his tent into the rain and was instantly drenched by the downpour. The water felt good splashing on his face. He couldn't help but laugh, it felt amazing to be in the rain. He looked around, but it was useless, the rain was too thick to see. He shrugged and meandered off into the darkness. He had camped out by the edge of the lake, so he assumed that he'd find the water eventually if he kept walking, unless he was walking the wrong way...
"Your awfully exposed, aren't you, Thief?" A voice asked from the darkness ahead of him. It was a familiar voice, and he knew he had heard it somewhere before.
"Oh, I'm not exposed!" He answered cheerfully. "Now that time I found myself completely nude, strapped to the minute hand of Clock Tower in the snow with archers shooting at me... then I was exposed." He said, chuckling as he thought back to pleasant memories.
Light shined ahead of him, from where the voice was. As the light drew closer, a face appeared next to it, then a body. Frost stood in Eldrin's path, holding a lantern near his face. He was covered by a hooded white cloak, standing on a section of the lake which he had frozen. "Afraid of the rain?" Eldrin asked, not particularly hostile. "It can't hurt you, in fact it might just help. You always seem so unhappy... Rain always cheers me up!" He suggested, smiling innocently at Frost. After a moment of staring into Frost icy eyes, expecting a response, he spoke again, "In fact, I think rain might be my favorite thing." Frost responded with a smirk, cruel and savage.
Ice shards formed between them, the points aimed straight at Eldrin. The icicles shot at Eldrin, but he was too fast. He jumped over them, flipping just to be showy. As landed he flicked a finger at the lantern. Fire erupted from the lantern, aimed straight at Frost's face. Now it was Frost's turn to chuckle. The fire was almost immediately stopped by a small wall of ice. "You can't hurt me Eldrin. Not in the rain." He said, his voice taunting. Just like the water drop. "You see, rain is also one of my favorite things... Because, in the rain... I am a god!" Before Eldrin could even make a "insane megalomaniac" comment, ice formed around his torso locking his arms to his side. Eldrin jumped away from Frost, melting the ice using his own body heat. He knew it was risky, but he had no choice. If he used too much of his body heat he could die, but if he didn't Frost would kill him! As Eldrin moved he heard ice projectiles whistling through the air. He was knocked to the ground as seven ice shards struck his chest. The ice melted almost immediately, allowing his blood to flow freely out of the open wounds. He forced himself to his feet, they were shallow wounds. Luckily they hadn't reached any major organs. "I let you dodge the first time. To get your hopes up. Now I'm going to crush them!" Frost's voice carried over to him. Eldrin tried to dodged as more ice shards came from in front of him, but they melted and four shards hit him in the back instead. This time he did not fall, but instead stood resilient. Ice formed around his feet, locking him in place. He was forced to block a volley of ice blades with his arms. He knew he could take much more, his arms were practically useless. Three blades had hit his right arm, six had hit his left. Did Frost know he was left-handed? He had to assume it was a coincidence that the most damage was done to his dominant arm. A giant fist of ice suddenly smashed into his face, sending him spiraling through the air. He slammed to the ground, mud splattering all over him. As soon as he landed ice started forming over his legs. Eldrin tried to harness his body heat, but found he barely had enough to keep himself alive. "It's useless, don't worry though. You never had a chance in the first place." Ice formed around Eldrin's head, forcing his head to turn toward Frost. The man stood above Eldrin, his smile was like a replica of Eldrin's usual, but lacking Eldrin's warmth.
Viciously, Frost kicked Eldrin's face, shattering the ice holding his head in place. "I have a message for you Thief. From the boy named Sayo." Eldrin stared up at Frost in shock. Frost reached into his pocket and pulled out a strip of blue cloth. He dropped the cloth and Eldrin's right hand, the least damaged, caught it instinctively. He remembered this cloth well. Long ago, he had used it to bind a wound on Sayo's arm. That was the first time they met. From that point on they had been inseparable. Sayo was the little brother he never had. Eldrin began to shiver violently, not from the cold, not from anger. Blood stains covered the cloth. Emotions filled Eldrin that he had never felt, cold from the inside, not out. He felt like ice was growing out from his heart. Agonizing pain exploded from his chest, far worse than anything he had ever felt. He told himself that he was wrong a million times in the couple seconds before Frost spoke. "He said 'Goodbye'."
Emptiness was all that Eldrin could feel. Suppressing silence surrounded him. The raindrops falling around him made no splashes. Frost's mouth moved, but no words came out. Lightning flashed, but no thunder followed. All he could hear was Sayo's words. "Promise me Eldrin! You always take such careless risks! So you have to promise me! If you're gonna die, then you have to at least say goodbye first." Eldrin smiled, but it was a forlorn smile, devoid of happiness. He had laughed at the time, and promised just to get Sayo to shut up. But still, it was the first time anyone had actually shown that they cared about him. He was touched, despite himself.
"Sayo... NO DAMN IT!!! I was the one who was supposed to say it! Not you..." A voice in his head cried out. He stared up at Frost's smiling face, his expression was blank. He was lost. His normally sharp, glowing red eyes dulled and glazed over. He had never even considered Sayo dying a possibility. Ice formed above them, a giant blade, pointing down at Eldrin. Frost stepped out of the way. Eldrin barely read his lips, something about a fitting execution. The blade finished forming, it was seven feet long, and four feet wide at the top, tapering to a point mere molecules thick. Two smaller ice blades stabbed into his shoulders, holding him in place. They were really just superfluous, there was no need to hold him. He didn't even try to move as the blade shot downward at his chest. His grip tightened on the bloodstained blue cloth. "Goodbye, Sayo."
