(ooc: Just establishing some important stuff. Don't mind me. Just writing a little novel.)
This time of the year, the water was always refreshing as the sun beat down and heated up the world. As far as temperature went, the river was fairly dependable when it came to the task of cooling anyone who didn't prefer warmth. Rii didn't mind either way, but there was a sense of relief when she shed the unnecessary garments that all the land humanoids insisted on wearing before plunging into the river without checking how cold it really was, or if there was any danger. Rii didn't fear the unfamiliar, so what reason did she have for fearing something so familiar as this?
Now submerged in the water, Rii found herself surrounded by a fair amount of fish and plants, all beckoning for her to see what they could do for the world. A smile on her face, the Zora cast her eyes around in an attempt to choose one. A flash of red signaled the presence of a Red Cloak, which was a small and persistant little fish that had red scales in the spring and summer when it wanted to mate, but black when it desired to hide in autumn and fall. Rii knew what the Red Cloak could do by heart, but she was not one to rush through much of anything except healing if necessary and dodging dangerous attacks. So instead Rii leisurely followed the Red Cloak. While it darted around, it still wasn't hard to predict that it was simply zig zagging to show off its speed. Rii allowed this fact to drift away from her as she mentally reached out. Red Cloak, Red Cloak... Red scales crushed into a powder and consumed for shivers and mild frost bite. Black scales applied for rashes and inflamation. Collecting the scales often meant killing the fish, but on rare occasions she caught a Red Cloak shedding its scales of the previous season. This was no such time, so she let the fish slip away into the water.
Rii eased back up to the surface, breaking with a happy gasp as her body adjusted to breathe oxygen from the air. The sun was slipping below the trees. Soon the Zora Guards of the day watch would be coming in for their meal. Now she unfortunately had to be on her way. So, returning to the water, Rii began to swim against the current, allowing herself numerous pauses to analyze other animals and plants. Finally she was at her destination. Rii reached out to the currents around her and then pushed upward, twirling as she did so. She flew out of the water before softly tumbling onto the rocky soil. Rii stood, a broad smile on her face as she pranced up the rocks to observe the domain below.
Perfect timing. The guards were switching at that moment as the sun officially vanished beneath the horizon, leaving a portion of the sky bathed in purples and the remains of vibrant orange. Soon, though, the stars would scare away even that.
Quiet and satisfied with the situation, Rii crept along the edge, making her way through the almost painfully familiar place. Finally she reached the Guards quarters. She knew which room she needed to go to. Thankfully, the door wasn't locked, probably because the Zora in question had just gotten back and had gone in to put away his things. But he'd be back after dinner. Knowing this, Rii entered the small space, tracing a webbed hand along the cave walls slick with moisture. Rii remembered when the occupant of this room had first received it and how he had been irritated that he'd have to find a special container for all his books so they wouldn't get wet. She didn't understand the problem much. He could just read outside.
Rii continued to look around the room, eyes falling to the bed of rock covered in seaweed. She hadn't slept on seaweed in years. Most places had straw or feather beds covered in linens. She had no preference to either bedding, though her back occasionally said otherwise, because feather beds molded to her curves perfectly. But then again seaweed beds were cooler in the summer... The female Zora shook her head, and decided maybe she should remind herself of what seaweed beds were like, though she could still perfectly remember.
With that, Rii fell onto the pile, eyes sliding shut as she remembered her room and her seaweed bed. She had never cared for her room and usually slept in the giant room with the rest of the normal male guards, partially because it unnerved them and partially because she saw no reason to be separate from them. Plus, they were always so fun. The female guards were too, but staying with the female guards if not her own room was expected. If she stayed with the male guards, it bugged the male guards, and a rare few of the female guards. Rii decided to think back to all the times she heard the guards sleeptalking to make time slip by faster.
After around ten minutes she sat up and opened her pack to take inventory of all her supplies. She did this for the next fifteen minutes until the door opened.
"Rii?!"
Rii didn't even look up as she smelled a vial to make sure the extract was still good. "You just got fresh seaweed for your bed," she observed, sliding the vial into it's proper place. "Though this feels like southern river. You didn't happen to see any Spineweed, did you? I've been meaning to get more."
The Zora was still standing in the doorway, mouth open.
"If not I guess it's okay if you just stand there. You could collect Cavern Flies in your mouth and then I could take them and turn them into a paste," Rii reasoned as she took out another vial to inspect.
At this remark the Zora promptly shut his mouth. "I don't look for Spineweed anymore since you haven't been back in years. I used to, but I threw them out last year because I figured if you ever came back they'd be too dry for you to use," he explained.
Rii's head snapped up, eyes wide as saucers. "You had Spineweed four years dried and you threw it out? Such an unappreciated plant... it takes me ages to get together a stock and you toss it all out," Rii said with apparent sadness. Then her expression brightened. "No matter. I have a stock somewhere, and it's five years untouched. Should be wonderful."
"I still can't believe you're here! You knew we were eating, why didn't you come visit?" the male Zora said, obviously upset. "The others are gonna be so excited you're back. Come on__"
Rii shot him a look though. A look that said close that door in two seconds or I'll put Skulltula powder on your chest while you sleep. The guards were all fairly certain she never meant it in this way, as Rii wasn't a vengeful person, but they always did what she asked when it came to that look. They all still remembered the fateful day they finally got the unintentional meaning behind that look. One of the guards was fetching Rii supplies and fell and broke a vial full of Skulltula powder. The broken glass in his chest was the least of his worries once the powder hit his skin. He didn't go back on watch for three weeks, and if anyone even told stories about Skulltulas he jumped back about five feet.
So, instead of going to tell the others, the Zora closed the door behind him and fully entered his room.
"You're such a mindreader sometimes, Pheln. Though you actually are more familiar with elemental magic," Rii noted with a pleased smile.
Pheln wasn't sure how to tell her he only knew what she wanted because she had threatened him by looking at him and there wasn't much else to know except that he'd been about to go get the other guards, so clearly that was the action she didn't want. But he shrugged it off. "So I'm not supposed to tell everyone you're here because...?"
"I've got a question for you. And then work. Besides, they have more important things," Rii explained, satisifed with the contents of the vial in her hands. She placed it back.
"Okay... well, what do you need to know?" Pheln still wasn't satisfed with the answer, because he didn't want Rii to go, but he'd have to put up with it. Hopefully she'd return for longer one day.
Rii nodded. "If a person suffered severe electrical shock through magic which caused their heart to fail, and was then brought back repeating the electrical process without magic would there be possible side-effects?" Rii asked.
"It's possible. The magical residue would still be in their body and could cling to the electricity," Pheln reasoned, sitting down next to her.
"So would they give off sparks or electrical energy?"
"That's the most likely way that her body would deal with it. Magical residue leaves the body over a few days after magic has been used on or by a person. But if the magic kills you it remains until you decay, so the residue that is holding onto the electricity in the person's body would probably last years."
Rii thought this over and stopped sifting through her supplies. "Would they be able to control the sparks?" she then inquired.
Pheln frowned, furrowing his brow, but eventually he shrugged. "Depends on the person. Strong-willed people with a stronger mindset can probably handle the energy and control it at will, though this means that the body won't be continuously giving off the energy, and it will take longer for it to go away," Pheln explained.
Rii nodded. "Alright then," she said, deciding that the girl she spoke of was most definitely a person with a stronger mindset. She turned to Pheln, smiling softly. "Thank you Pheln!" With that she hugged him, and the male Zora hugged her back. Then she leapt off his bed, still smiling as she departed. Pheln shook his head, not quite sure why she had needed to know the things she asked about. But this was Rii. More than likely he had no reason to be worried.
Rii left, pondering her most recent patient. So there was a chance the girl was giving off electrical sparks. How very curious. Rii wondered if the same could be said for magical fire. She should've asked Pheln about that as well, but she was sure that if there were any fire issues she would hear about it. For now, maybe it was time Rii went and got a horse. Travelling on foot or by water was fun, but she wanted an animal companion.
