Continuation of: Make a Living Location: Kokiri Forest
Thell was never sure if she was a desert girl. The desert was hot, reminding her of fire, but at the same time if she went some place cold people tended to make more fires to keep warm. Apparently not everyone had rocks charmed to heat up. There also weren't large abundances of forests. Well, there really weren't any, and the forest was where Thell made her normal-life living. Not having access to wood made her unhappy, considering she only had a couple wood blocks in her pack. If she needed to make something it would have to be beyond pathetic in size.
Whether or not she liked the desert, however, didn't really matter. There was something oddly familiar about the place. She vaguely recalled coming here when she was little, maybe a few years before her father died too. She was fairly certain she had come more often as a small child, but the visits were always very short if she remembered correctly. And, being an easily bored child, she had never really paid attention to where she was going. So, while everything felt familiar, she wasn't quite sure where she was going.
Vandir wasn't going to be of any help either. Most of her visits had happened before she made him, and after he had come to life, her father had told her that if they ever went to visit the Gerudos again, she was not to bring Vandir. Well, the correct way to say it was if she ever went to visit the Gerudos again, because one fact Thell's mind remembered about the visits was that her father had only gone with her once. The first time. All the other times one of the village women had escorted her there to visit the people of her other heritage.
"I don't remember why I could never go with you," Vandir suddenly said as the group made their way through.
Thell frowned as she glanced at Vandir where he was perched on her shoulder. "Me neither," she replied, twirling her battle-axe, precious Lumin, in her left hand. "Is now a good time to say I vaguely recall how to get to the Gerudos? I think I was ten last time I went, and that was nearly a decade ago..." Thell almost felt like she was getting old when she made that statement, but she shrugged it off. Blade probably wouldn't make a comment, and Kadina was close to her age so she couldn't make a comment. Besides, with age was coming experience, such as never leaving Vandir as guard because very skilled assassins like Blade could go right through him, and she was also learning that if you don't know how to get somewhere you probably should've brought a map with you. She just hoped she wouldn't get ditched in the middle of the desert because of her memory issues. She had worked hard to get Blade on her team! Well, if she was being honest not really, but she must'e done something, because Blade had joined and Sappho had not. As for Kadina, that was a matter of luck. And this way Thell could see Rii again, which would be a nice change.

The sun beat down and the sand whirled in tiny dirt devils around their ankles. Kadina had wrapped her waist shaw over her head into a tagelmust to keep sand out of her mouth. However, her exposed areas, arms and midriff, were roughened by the continuous lashing of the elements. She hated the unsatisfying feeling of her little slippered feet sinking in the sand with every step, but had become entranced by the tiny sparkling particles that slid into place around her feet before kicking it backward and watching the sand catch in the wind.
Mesmorized by the sand cycle under her feet, she thought of her horse, Kitty, and wondered what could have possibly happened to her. She distinctly remembered Luca zapping the poor creature to death as it tried to defend her, but the body was gone when Kadina had returned. How many days had she been unconscious? These were questions she would save for Rii. If anyone knew, surely she did.
It had been four days since they left for the desert, in which time Kadina had learned very little about Thell and the assassin. They walked until exhaustion, camped, and did it all again the next morning only stopping once for supplies at the halfway point in Hyrule Market. So far, the journey had been pretty normal, other than the poe that tried possessing Kadina the previous night where they camped outside of the valley. To think she saw Blade as her only threat.
She still wasn't settled about him. Maybe it was just that vibe. The vibe she got from all assassins. Kadina had a bad history with them seeing as she was on the top most wanted list of Hyrule. Had he really not noticed? Then again, assassins and bounty hunters were two completely separate things. Maybe her contract hadn't gotten around in his organization yet... She had never been approached by an Assassin of Hyrule. It was always one from some other dark order she had never heard of. Regardless, she wouldn't let her guard down. She snapped out of her sand trance as soon as she realized how vulnerable it made her for attack.
"Is now a good time to say I vaguely recall how to get to the Gerudos?....."
"The hideout is just ahead, but I suggest we go around into the blind spot of their watch tower near those cliffs." Kadina pointed in that direction. "Who exactly are we looking for again? I think a description would help. Also, if Nadeana shows up, 'princess' of the Gerudos, " Kadina clarified for Thell, "Let me deal with her... The Gerudos are going through a civil war at the moment and so they've become very... erm... well... more hostile than usual, so be very careful."

At Kadina's suggestion about going around to get in the blind spot, Thell frowned. She personally was all set to just step right in and throw an axe if her relatives didn't like her being there. But alas, she was in a group, so it was probably better to go with Kadina's suggestion. Still, it was reassuring to know that she hadn't been too far off about the hideout. She had thought it wasn't that far off, it was just the specifics that had evaded her.
Kadina continued, asking about who they were going to see, and also warning them about the Gerudo civil war and Nadeana. The name was definitely familiar to Thell. Thell glanced back at Kadina to respond, and frowned when she saw how uncomfortable she looked in the sand. Thell's Gerudo skin made it so that the sand didn't bother her much, though her white scarf was pulled to cover her mouth and nose. Thell almost suggested that Kadina just ditch the slippers and walk barefoot like Kell was doing, but decided it might not work out as well for Kadina in the weather. "More hostile than usual? Huh. Guess they actually will slit my throat on sight then. Sounds fun," Thell said, remembering when she had met her mother's childhood friend for the first time. She had certainly not been happy to see the reason why her best friend had died. "I just wanted to check and see if they remember any strangers coming through. Male, creepy, very distinct smell. More detail later. Anyway, I guess it'd be a good plan to talk to my mom's sister, too. Malya. Haven't seen her in ages either, but she should still look pretty much like me. Her and my mom were twins, and I'm almost their spitting image. Minus the eye and burns."

"If it's subtlety we're after, you came to the right guy. I've used that blind spot before, it's easy enough to exploit." Blade said, brushing off sand kicked onto his leggings by Kadina. "As for everything else, we'll have to play it by ear and hope for the best."

Hours earlier, Eldrin had sat on one of those aforementioned cliffs, his legs dangling carelessly over the edge. He held in his hands a small ornate mirror that he had stolen earlier from the Gerudo. He stared intently at the boy in the mirror. Boy? Or man? It was hard to tell. He hadn't ever really known how old he was... He figured late teens, early twenties. He knew he had been around for at least ten years, that was when he started keeping track. Ayishe had estimated his age to be about seventeen to twenty-one. Eldrin kind of liked the sound of nineteen, it was a good number. But who knew? He could just look a lot younger than he was, or much older.
He had never really cared much for looks. His matted charcoal black hair was thick and coarse, constantly in a mess. His eyes always had that disturbing wild look to them. And his near permanent smile seemed to creep a lot of people out. And what need did he have to look appealing anyway? He was a thief, not a grifter. Yet, now he was concerned. His hand ran slowly across the line that seemed split his face. The mark from Basira's whip stretched horizontally across his face, pale against his tanned skin. It started by his right ear, ran over the bridge of his nose, and tapered to an end on his left cheekbone. It was thin, clean, not really grotesque. But still, it was a scar. Sure, he had plenty of other scars, but none on his face. Facial scars were ugly. He might not have been extremely handsome before, but at least he had been decent. Mildly good-looking, perhaps. How was he supposed to get a woman now? Sure, he had no plans of settling down... ever. But he didn't quite like the idea of not having the option to. It was sort of like depriving him of his freedom to be chained down if he so chose. Then again, perhaps the scar made him look dignified, or maybe even tough. He tried on a malicious scowl, but just ended up making himself laugh. Nah, he decided. He couldn't pull off that look.
He sighed contentedly and let the mirror slip from between his fingers. He leaned over to watch as it fell. With a faint crash it shattered on a rock below the cliffs. A hundreds shards of reflected sunlight, splintering into the sand. His face, and the scar, were gone for now."Good riddance," he muttered, leaning back to take a nap. His legs still dangled over the cliff's edge, blowing slightly in the wind. He slept fairly peacefully, his arms behind his head as cushions, snoring just a little.
Eldrin awoke to a faceful of sand. He sat up quickly, spluttering and spitting out sand and trying in vain to wipe it from his eyes. After a moment of dazed confusion, Eldrin remembered where he was. The weather must gotten worse while had slept. He used up the last of the water in his flask to clean his face. Definitely worth it. After all, dehydration wasn't that bad. He stood up and stretched, popping his back and knuckles and doing other things to prepare for his next thieving run to the fortress. He slid his hand back into Avarice and tightened the straps. Then he checked his dagger, bombs and throwing knives. When he was confident that he was ready, he stood to leave. Before he had even taken a step, the thief heard voices on the wind. He could tell it was a group of people headed for the fortress, probably not for the right reasons if they were using the blind-spot to get by the watchtower.
"Hm... Perhaps these poor weary travelers are carrying the heavy burden of valuables.," he said to no one but the blue sky above him. "Being the good samaritan I am, I find myself obligated to relieve these tired people of their troubles..." The thief backtracked along the path until he could just barely see the bundled travelers through the sand on the wind. He slinked behind a conveniently placed rock and sat down. He leaned luxuriously against it and stretched out his legs. Why not get comfortable while he waited for them to get close enough to apprehend? He saw no good reason.
As an afterthought he slipped the Purloined Mask over his face. His scar was now an easily recognizable trait. If his victims saw it and reported it to authorities, he'd be caught next time he showed up in any major settlement. Sure, his red eyes were pretty unique, but not completely. He wondered how many times Azrael had been accosted by guards who thought he was Eldrin. Probably a lot. The Purloined Mask was a simple full face wooden mask painted black and trimmed in gold. Carved onto the front was an unnaturally wide and toothy smile. The smile stretched from one end of the mask to the other, literally ear to ear. The teeth were brilliant white, and the lips golden. The nose was small and barely noticeable next to the uncanny smile. The eye-holes were lined with gold and Eldrin's red eyes shone through warmly.
As he waited, he caught snatches of their conversation. Apparently they planned to ask the Gerudo (or Gerudos? He never could figure out the plural of Gerudo...) about a strange man who smelled funny. He didn't smell funny. Not as far as he knew anyway. He tried to think of the last person he had smelled, and if that man smelled funny. He vaguely remembered smelling a very manly woman named Agnis Peppersnip a month ago in Clock Town, but she smelled like daffodils. Did daffodils smell funny? Perhaps he should inform this questing soul that he had discovered her target in a daffodil-scented manwoman named Agnis Peppersnip in Clock Town. Then he remembered the task at hand, robbing them. Maybe he could drop a hint about Agnis on his way out, as a sign of good faith. In any case, they were getting closer now and he began to focus on his first move. He shifted into a crouching position, his every muscle tensed to pounce out and catch them by surprise. Perhaps they had food. Good meat, not the salted crap the Gerudo ate. Fruit too, that was a rare find in the desert. A mischievous grin spread across his face, almost matching that of the Purloined Mask. His scar tingled slightly as his face moved. He could hope...

Kadina snickered deviously as she watched Blade shake the sand from himself. She was tickled to see her unintentional act had irritated him even if only slightly, for if he hadn't cared, he wouldn't have shaken it off. She zoned out for a minute to consider how mentally unstable a simple and unusual pleasure like that made her. She didn't have anything against Blade except for suspicion, and naturally, that shouldn't have been enough for her to find satisfaction in his annoyance. However, she accepted that if she were crazy, that was fine by her. Insanity gets you everything. Ask the old folk. She would even fake it on occasion to get free meals in the market, or a cold beverage from a highly reputable pub. It worked! Infact, the way she saw it, the technique made her a level 24 con artist within a level system she had created all her own, 24 following 23: Mastery of the missing puppy act. It's harder than it sounds when you're a grown woman, but by the gods she had figured it out to it's very last sympathetic detail.
Sweat was beginning to bead on various parts of Kadina's body. The heat wasn't something foreign to her. Her dark skin could tell you that. But something was physically different about Kadina since the incident... another reason she was so eager to find Rii. The charge in her body was speeding up. She could feel it. It must be due to the heat. She thought as she ran her hand over her arm through the tiny heat waves she could see refracting off of her skin. She must have been 100+ degrees. The charge was making her twitchy, jumpy... She felt as if she might explode from the energy and pass out any minute. "Whatever we're doing, let's make it snappy. I've got an issue..." She held her arm out to show the others the heat rising from her body. Suddenly, something caught Kadina's eye. Light reflecting nearby at the base of the nearest cliff. She squinted and shielded her eyes from the sun to see. "What is that?" She wondered curiously as she proceeded toward the mysterious phenomena of gleaming light...

Even Blade seemed bothered by the sand, but that was more amusing. Thell could tell that Kadina was normal. She had flaws and energy and other characteristics that made her seem... like a person. Blade still seemed a bit out there. He had his moments where Thell would laugh at his oddity, but otherwise he was discreet, sneaky, subtle, and seemed not bothered by anything. But sand apparently was a different story. Thell didn't bother to stifle her open laughter, but the howling wind and her thick scarf did, much to her disappointment. But she did hear Kadina snicker, and she was glad she wasn't the only one who found this small annoyance amusing. Who's so smart and tough now, Blade, almighty avoider of sand?
Oh yes. If Vandir had heard that Thell was positive he would've rolled his glowing eyes at her.
Thell's head snapped to where Kadina had mentioned the gleaming light. Her eyes narrowed even further than they already, a cold and bright blue against the rest of her warm desert color palette. At least of her face, full of pinks, deep tan and red. Thell didn't like this. That was for sure. "Vandir, unbutton my pack for a quick second, and then button it again when I'm done," Thell whispered to the wooden dragon, not liking the light. If this was the blindspot as Kadina and Blade were saying, there should not be light there at the bottom of the cliff. Unless there was something metallic or mirror-like. If it was a mirror, it was likely a small child out and about... unless this civil war Kadina spoke of got in the way of that. But if it was a blade, then Thell wasn't taking any chances.
The moment Thell heard the button unsnap, she began to focus energy on her neck so that beneath the thick white scarf her neck began to glow green. Once it was done she'd send a strand into her backpack and activate one of her creations. "Wanna go look, or do we keep going and let it come to us?"

"Maybe they finally decided to post a guard there." Blade said. "If she hasn't seen us, we can use the rocks to our advantage." Blade explained, pointing to the right of the glimmer.

Eldrin's eye caught the glint of the mirror at the same time as his targets. Damn, he really did have terrible luck. Oh well, there was always the more aggressive approach. He knew they were staring in his general direction, expecting for someone to emerge. But he had other plans...
Suddenly, the ground between the group and the shattered mirror exploded. Sand flew into the air like a massive geyser, raining down upon them along with small chunks of more solid earth. Eldrin moved as fast as his legs could carry him. He slipped out from behind the rock in the moment of distraction and dove behind a sand dune unseen. Seconds later, he stood behind the woman wearing the tagelmust. He wrapped his arm around her neck and pressed Avarice to her throat, his dagger pointed at the girl with the axe. She had been to dangerous looking to take prisoner, though she was the smallest. And the man was obviously bigger than Eldrin and probably stronger. He had a throwing knife tucked into his sleeve just in case they tried a long range attack. It wasn't his fanciest hold up. It was rather typical actually, but it would do.
"Welcome to the desert, ladies and gentleman. Unfortunately you chose the toll road. Now if you don't mind, all of your valuables and any interesting trinkets in a nice neat little pile over there. Unless you want to see this lovely lady here bleed, that is..." Eldrin said through the Purloined Mask, nodding his head to a predesignated spot where he'd even been nice enough to draw a little circle in the sand. He had of course, no intention of killing his hostage. But they didn't have to know that. Just then, something coursed through the arm touching the girl in the tagelmust. Mild pain shot down his arm, then was gone as fast as it came. Did she just shock me?!

The explosion was the last thing Kadina needed to calm her nerves. She thought surely she would seize to death from all the sudden excitement and energy once Avarice clung around her neck. Being use to such unusual and hostile circumstances, she simply sighed and mentally complained about the heat. She could feel her blood boiling... and that was nothing.. until She heard Eldrin's familiar voice behind her.
"Welcome to the desert, ladies and gentleman..." She could feel her blood bubbling inside and the surge of energy coursed wildly within as he spoke. After her charge reacted with the energy of his own body and shocked him, Kadina lost it. What.. an.... "Idiot!!" Kadina shouted as she grabbed Eldrin's wrist and pried Avarice off of her throat. She proceeded to twist his other wrist with her left hand, releasing his dagger. Her right hand came around over her left shoulder, clung to the collar of his shirt, and flung him to the ground. Her heel at his ankle so he could not catch nor resist the fall. She pulled the taglemust down from her mouth so every profane word that followed would reach his ears loud and clear.
The heat had really gotten to her. This was nothing compared to their last encounter. Realizing her overreaction, she took a deep breath and placed her hands on her hip shifting her weight to one leg. Everyone was quiet. She realized she had just gone Hulk. She licked her dry lips and looked away. "Hey..." She greeted Eldrin as she blinked rapidly to remove sand in her eye. "What's up?"

Blade whirled around at the sound of Eldrin's voice. "Are you stupid or some-" Blade started to say. He was cut off by Kadina's obscenities and ensuing beatdown of Eldrin. Not bad. Blade was a bit more wary of Kadina now. He leaned over Eldrin, but addressed Kadina. "So I guess that was pretty stupid of him, huh?"

The attempted robbery happened in a flash of an eye. In that moment Thell was ready to awaken a creature in her pack and offer her bag full of animated wooden terror to the thief. But it proved unnecessary when Kadina showed her true... colors, both in violence and in language. Blade may have seen shocked at first when Kadina had brought the thief to the ground, but if he was ever surprised it quickly left his face. Then Kadina continued to greet the thief as Blade pointed out his stupidity.
"Don't tell me you know the thief," Thell asked, approaching the two and shifting the axe in her hand.
"Does this mean I can button up your pack again?" Vandir asked suspiciously, coming out from his position on top of the pack to eye Eldrin on the ground.
Thell considered it briefly, and by briefly the narrator means half a second. "Nope, keep it open." From beneath her scarf, Thell's neck still glowed green with energy and potential life force, just in case.

Eldrin was taken down before he even had a chance to recognize the voice calling him an idiot. As the dust settled from his beatdown, Eldrin stared bewildered at Kadina. It wasn't the first time she'd beat his ass, or the first time he'd heard her speak in such a way. But it was the first time it had seemed real. Even as his mind frantically tried to sort out the details, his fingers still wrapped around the hilt of his hidden throwing knife as if there were a real threat. Then Kadina seemed to go back to normal. He sat up as she shifted her stance. "Hey... What's up?" She said rather awkwardly. Then Blade's comment, "So I guess that was pretty stupid of him, huh?"
Eldrin stared at Kadina for a moment, then Blade. His face was unreadable behind the Purloined Mask, but his eyes just kept shifting between the two of them. Then suddenly, the thief burst into laughter. He fell back into the sand, his chest heaving with hysterical laughter. His laughter continued on like this for a while before being interrupted by a groan of pain. Eldrin rubbed the spot near his lungs wear he'd taken most of the force from the crash. "Next time just kill me straight up, okay?" He said to Kadina, sitting up again. "And for the record, Blade, it was a fantastic plan... Unless my hostage turned out to be a skilled psychopath." After resting for a minute, Eldrin stood up with a pained grunt. He collected his dagger and put it away. Though he deliberately did not show it, Eldrin was worried for Kadina. She still had that electric stuff going on, plus an uncharacteristic temper. Something was going on, and he was going to get down to the bottom of it.
As he pushed away these thoughts, the girl with the axe came to his attention. She had asked something earlier, but he hadn't heard her. She looked wary of him, and he couldn't see why. Perhaps he had offended her by not taking her hostage, or maybe she had been looking to rob Blade and Kadina herself... Well, if she was then it was a good thing for her that he'd made that mistake first. Nah, axe wielders weren't really the type to steal. More the type to cleave your head in two over the last chicken wing.
He decided to be friendly. Even if she was the cleaving type, he figured it might be fun. He'd never had his head cleave in two, nor did he want to. But, then again he did enjoy trying new things. Completely forgetting his scar, the thief pulled the Purloined Mask off of his face. He let the mask fall, and it hung from the twine string that connected it to his collar.
"Hi, the name's Eldrin. And yours?"

So Kadina and Blade did know the thief, as the man made it so clear as he stood and called Blade by name without introduction amongst his laughter. This was unsettling. Thell was waiting for the day where the team would meet up with Rii, or the boys back home, or all the crazy drunks and carpenter folk she knew. Then maybe she wouldn't feel so isolated in this particular meeting, considering so far Blade had found some sort of connection to every person Thell and him had encountered, while Thell remained the one surrounded by strangers.
But she wouldn't worry about it too much. She had an axe and her ever-so-logical wooden dragon with her at all times, and eventually she'd have Kadina and Blade to list as her own connections and old friends.
The thief turned to Thell, removing his mask and introducing himself. His name was Eldrin, but his little thieving act and scar on his face said he'd probably gone by lots of other names, mostly ones that any good mother would lock her child up for. Actually, Kadina had probably just called him by half of Eldrin's unofficial names. Thell hadn't realized Kadina to have such a colorful tongue. They really needed to swap notes.
Still, Thell focused more on his scar. She brought down her white scarf so that she could speak and actually be heard as the sand-filled winds lessened slightly, dousing the green energy around her neck entirely. Vandir noticed this and crawled back onto her pack to close it.
"Thell," the half-Gerudo said to Eldrin, a bitter smile on her face. She debated moving her wild red hair to compare scars, confident she would win that little battle. Missing an eye could be a pain, and the rare soreness was always annoying, but if the burns were good for one thing it was for one-upping all the people with battle scars. "I like the scar. Far better than your fancy little mask." Speaking of the mask, Thell had a thing or two to say about the carving of it. But she managed to hold her tongue.

Psychopath? Kadina's ears perked up a bit. A smile crossed her face and she looked down at her feet while Thell and Eldrin talked. Psychopath. Guess it's confirmed... Eh, I'll take it. Now I don't have to question my sanity... because I don't have any! Damn... I should high five myself. After all, I don't think that'd be out of the ordinary for a psycho.. So she did. Just as she had, thunder rolled in the distance. Confused and half stunned, Kadina thought she had caused it. She looked up at the sky, then at the others when she noticed Eldrin's scar. They had just been talking about it previous to her thunder clap, but she had been in her own world. The girl zoned out too often. One would probably diagnose her with A.D.H.D.
"Eldrin! What happened?" She reached her hand out to help him up, wary of touching him. There was a flash of lightening followed by thunder. The storm was off in the distance.
This was good. If they waited for it to roll in, then Nadeana wouldn't be able to sand shift/bend and that one guy couldn't start any fires. It was perfect!
Another sound. The blowing of a whistle followed by the high pitched squealing of a Gerudo approaching from around the cliff. Just their their luck... They had been spotted and now surrounded by Gerudo thieves on horseback likely heading out to loot and pillage. "Great..." Kadina growled under her breath as she grabbed Eldrin's hand, shocked him (unintentionally), and pulled him to his feet. All six of the surrounding Gerudo had deku nuts in hand. When Kadina had noticed, she was about to release another profane word, but it was too late. All four had been stunned, cuffed, and thrown in the keep.
