The full moon bathed Hyrule in a strange stark glow. It was both eerie and beautiful at once, breathtaking as it was unsettling. It was a patchwork night, an amalgam of day and its counterpart. As bright as the moon could shine, it was. Almost as if it had decided to try and outdo the sun. And maybe it had. If it had, then it was surely putting up a valiant fight. Yet, ultimately, the moon could not outshine the sun. It was a battle fought in vain. The grassy plains of Hyrule Field were quiet. Perhaps they had fallen silent in awe of the moon. Or maybe they held a reverent vigil in honor of the moon's inevitably failed campaign. Soft winds shifted the grasses and shrubs of the field. Even the nocturnal wildlife seemed to be moving more peacefully.
Suddenly the night was shook by the thundering of hooves, shattered by cries of fury. A lone figure raced across the field atop the back of a great stallion, pursued relentlessly by seven more steeds and eight riders. Of the eight chasers, one was riding with his brother in arms. For the thief they were following had commandeered his horse. They had been chasing the man since the Kokiri Forest. But then, without warning, the thief rider halted his horse. He pulled his reigns back and the horse reared up as it came to a sudden stop, but its rider did not lose his balance. He held himself firm by the strength of his legs alone. The stallion slammed its front two hooves back to the ground, crushing the soft grass beneath. The rider and steed turned to face the seven that came to stop before them. The thief's red eyes gleamed startlingly in the moonlight, revealing his heritage. Then it was a Sheikah that had stolen one of their mounts. So much for the noble agents of shadow that gave their lives in service of the king. Had the forgotten race truly fallen to such a pitiful low?
"Surrender, horse-thief! We seek only to regain that which is ours. If you hand over the horse, we'll let you live," the leader yelled, drawing his sword. He didn't want to hurt this stranger, but he would if he had to.
"Obviously you're new to this game we play, my good sirs! You're suppose to say 'hand over the horse and we'll kill you quickly'. Don't be such pacifists," the thief said in a remarkably amiable tone. It was as if he was talking to old friends. His right hand, one tattooed with the eye symbol of the Sheikah upon the back in scarlet ink, rose to push his hood. The hood fell back to reveal a messy assortment of coarse charcoal black hair and a smiling face. A horizontal scar ran from his right ear to the center of his left cheekbone, no doubt from a misadventure similar to this one. "I'm waiting..."
The leader stared in confusion. This thief was an odd one, he spoke as if he wanted to be killed. "There is no need for violence to come of this."
"But where's the fun in its absence?" the thief responded, playing with his horse's mane in a bored sort of way.
"Then you will not surrender?" the leader asked, obviously exasperated.
"Nope!"
"So be it," the leader dropped from his horse just as his seven companions did the same. All present but the thief drew out a weapon.
The thief's smile turned into a wicked grin. He tossed a small marble high into the air, though the men only saw him raise his hand. "Congratulations, gentlemen. You've just experienced your first encounter with Eldrin, thief extraordinaire. Don't forget me." Suddenly, an explosion tore through the air above their heads with a deafening roar. All of the horses but Eldrin's neighed wildly and bolted in various directions, leaving their masters in the dust. Eldrin's hand still stroked through his horse's main soothingly. Its muscles slowly loosened from the tense state of surprise they had entered. Close call. "Farewell, my good men," the thief said with a wink. And without further ado, he was gone. The mountless men merely watched, dumbfounded, as the thief galloped off into the night on their own horse.
Eldrin's slowed his pace when he was sure that he had lost the men who weren't even pursuing him any longer. He couldn't help but burst out in laughter. How gullible could they get? A thief encouraging a fight! Preposterous! Thieves were a cowardly, underhanded lot. Not noble fighters. Eventually he came upon the Lon Lon Ranch, and dismounted his horse. He tied the horse's reigns to the fence of the corral, and left it with the cloak he had been wearing. He had stolen that from an old cooper with a crooked nose in Kakariko Village.
Eldrin walked along the edge of the corral, rapping his knuckles upon every other fencepost in rhythmic intervals. The windows of the ranch house were dark. Clearly the residents within had retired for the night. It would have been an ideal target for burglary, if he had been incline to try. But Eldrin had a different goal in mind: sleep. If he remembered right, the loft above the stables was incredibly comfortable. He had slept there about a month back after he'd stolen the queen's favorite racing horse. After leaving the horse in the stables, stripped of it's ridiculously expensive saddle and some particularly excessive barding, he'd climbed up into the loft and hidden until the whole ordeal had blown over. He knew that the Lon Lon Ranch would not be searched for a stolen horse. After all, they were the most reputable ranch in all of Hyrule. To accuse them of such a crime would be an outrage. He had later sold the horse to a nice man with a funny black cloak and a weird sinister laugh. Oh well, he figured, that was the point of 'no questions asked'. So that weird people could buy stolen horses from random red-eyed strangers...
He hopped over the fence and crossed the grass quickly, just in case anybody from the ranch house looked out their window. He found the stable doors open, but nobody inside. "Isn't that strange..." Eldrin muttered, peering around into the blackness within. When he was sure he was alone, the thief wandered in and started checking out the various horses housed in the stable's stalls.
"You know what I haven't done in a while?"

Rii had been to visit her friend Pheln, and when all such things were said and done she walked away from her old home and realized what she was doing. Walking. She truly held no preference between walking, swimming, and riding. Or, at least when she looked at it from a general perspective. Depending on her mood, it occasionally changed.
Still, Rii did realize that it would be nice for emergencies that weren't occurring near bodies of water if she had a faster way of traveling. She could always run, but the unfamiliar movement a horse possessed as it raced across emerald fields?
It was just simpler to say that Rii saw nothing wrong with investing in a friendship with a steed. Alas, there weren't many wild horses nearby, so she journeyed to Lon Lon Ranch. If she was being truly honest as she approached the entrance, however, she wasn't quite sure how much a horse would cost. Perhaps she could make a bargain where she paid most of the price and then offered her healing knowledge to do a check on all the other animals.
The owner had found the offer reasonable and had said that her services would be worth as much as he normally paid the vet that visited from Hyrule Market.
But when she arrived at Lon Lon Ranch, the sun had been setting, and the owner informed the Zora woman that it was probably best if she saw them out in the yard the next morning instead of when they were in the stalls. Still, he told her that with her price range she could probably afford any horse in the first four rows of stalls.
Rii had left then, saying she would wait and perform her healing services the next day. The owner had offered her a place to sleep, though, feeling guilty for keeping her a day, and Rii had accepted with a wide grin.
Why does this matter? Because as Eldrin entered the stable, muttering to himself, Rii was about to drift off into slumber, the catchy rhythm she had been hearing outside having ended. She quietly shifted in the loft, recognizing the muttering but desiring to see for herself. Hay stuck to her scales where her long tunic-turned-sleeping-gown did not cover, but the Zora woman couldn't bring herself to care as she crept over to the opening where the ladder was often placed to reach the loft. Sure enough, it was Eldrin, his red eyes having just finished scanning the stable. He hadn't seen her.
"You know what I haven't done in a while?" he asked to presumably nobody.
She finally wrapped her gray fingers around the wooden edge of the loft and peered over the edge with a soft, almost lazy smile spread across her face. "I'm sure there are many things you haven't done in a while," she observed loudly. "So the question becomes if you were thinking of all the things you haven't done, or if you were suggesting a specific thing, Mister Eldrin."

One edge of Eldrin's mouth curved into a crooked smile as he heard a familiar voice drifting down from the loft. "Well, Miss Rii, I happened to be thinking of a specific thing. A thing a haven't done in at least two hours. And a thing that I'm sure you've never had the pleasure of doing, as are most of the things that I can think of not doing in a while," Eldrin replied without turning to face his Zora friend. He gently patted the nose of a mare in the stall in front of him as he spoke. It was a fine horse, as were most of the horses owned by the Lon Lon Ranch.
"But with your appearance comes yet another question. What are you up to, my dear friend?" he asked the healer, turning now to look up at her. Obviously, she was trying to sleep in the very loft that he had intended to occupy. But the Zora healer hardly seemed a likely candidate to be hiding out from authorities. Then it hit him, healer. Eldrin's eyes widened as he remembered his resolution back in Kakariko. He needed to learn the skill that his friend here specialized in. But he held his tongue. First, he would discover her reason for sleeping in the loft. Then, he would offer assistance in whatever endeavor had brought her here. And finally, he would ask for a lesson in the healing art as payment for services rendered.
He snickered inwardly at his plan. Of course, Rii probably would have freely given him such a lesson if he were to ask. But that was too easy...

Rii found Eldrin's rather short definition of 'a while' to be rather refreshing, as whenever she thought of it that way people tended to furrow their brows at her. Still, his observation that it was something Rii hadn't done intrigued her. Something unfamiliar? She liked the sound of that.
Before she could ask, though, Eldrin had asked his own question, which had to do with her business in the loft. "Sleeping. The chicken coop would have been interesting. I haven't slept in one before. But the owner here insisted I have the loft," Rii explained as she glanced around for a way to get down. The ladder was up in the loft with her, but she didn't see why she had to trouble with it. She did know it'd be best not to spook the horses, however. So, in three seconds time she had arranged her plan. "I offered to heal his animals in exchange for a horse, but he can't sell me one until tomorrow. He says I can afford any in the first four rows," Rii explained as she dropped down so she hung by her hands, wrapped her legs around a support post, and then quickly released the loft's ledge and grabbing onto the post with her hands as well. The Zora slid down to land softly on the ground before a thought occurred to her. She should look at the horses now, so she would know which ones she could look at in the yard tomorrow when they were running!
She was soon to be disappointed as she approached the first stall. There were eight in total her small pocket could afford with the help of her healing expertise. An arrogant horse, barely past his youthful days as a foolish colt, was still awake and shook his head at her before prancing over like a pompous noble, still keeping most of his distance with a stubborn huff. Rii frowned as she turned towards the black-haired thief and asked, "What of you, Mister Eldrin? More collections for the brigade, or is it a new adventure that took you here?"

"I'd give it a seven point five," the thief declared, rating Rii's show of acrobatics. Truly, this little stunt of her's was a fantastic sign. If he was taking the time to make a friend of her, then he had to be sure that she was willing to break away from conventional ways of doing things. Not to mention the fact that she had just displayed remarkable ingenuity and a quick mind. He had a feeling that this Zora would be a fine asset to his allies.
Before he knew it, Rii was next to him at the stalls and turning his own question to himself. "Something new, of course. I'm appalled by the thought of consistency," Eldrin replied, drifting over to where she was standing. He peered over her shoulder at the young stallion and clicked his tongue disapprovingly. "Such a shame... If only you had a better selection," he said, smirking mischievously. "But, tell me, if you could have any horse in this stable, which would you pick?" His question seemed innocent enough. He spoke as if it were not possible, a if he were inciting her to dream of what couldn't be. In reality, he was encouraging her to reach for the impossible, grab it, and make it her's.

Rii hadn't made a comment on Eldrin's rating of her acrobatics, though inside she felt herself oddly disappointed at being limited in her performance by the easily spooked horses.
Still, she carried on in her whimsical outlook of the world as she appraised the horse, about to move on to the next one. That was when Eldrin joined her, mentioning he was 'appalled by the thought of consistency'. A grin began to form on her face at that. Familiarity. Something she disliked as well. She was about to make a remark on it when Eldrin then said what she'd been thinking about that horse. This stallion was not for her. She wasn't sure the horse would be welcome to anything unfamiliar unless it was victory, because with his haughty attitude Rii was sure the Zora Guard back home would say he must have never won a competition in his life.
"But, tell me, if you could have any horse in this stable, which would you pick?"
Now there was a question. "Any... any wonderfully unfamiliar horse," Rii whispered softly into the stable, moving away from the horse. She drifted over to the other horses that the owner said she could afford, but they failed to impress. Most of them were too much of one thing, or had already reached their potential. Others were too old for what Rii intended to be doing. Still, in the end she'd have to pick one of the horses she had just looked at. But, according to Eldrin's question, these limitations did not matter at this moment. He was allowing her to not block out all possibilities, to... invest in them. No, that wasn't quite the word Rii desired. It was more like he was suggesting she create a dream for herself and then not simply think of it or strive for it, but claim it.
She didn't fear dreams. No, as she saw horses with ever-growing potential begin to materialize in the stalls she couldn't afford, she knew she didn't fear dreams. But she feared there was simply no way for her to claim any dream she could form at this point. She'd past the final affordable stall minutes ago.
She wandered slowly, running a hand along the bars of the window of each stall. Most horses were asleep. Besides the arrogant stallion, she'd encountered a grumpy old mare who was awake, and a skittish and fearful stallion as well. Still, the way some of them were sleeping, the direction they were facing, or simply their coats allowed her to form some opinion.
There was maybe five more rows of horses, but Rii found herself stopping before one of the stalls. It was a stallion, probably a ten-year-old. He was an appaloosa of ebony color with a white blanket of color over his rump and several ebony dots scattered over it. There was also a white spot over his left eye. He was awake and seemed to be eagerly nuzzling piles of hay in his stall. And that's when Rii saw it. The stallion moved a piece of hay and revealed a stash of apples and oats, all fresh. As the horse warily watched Rii before eating one of his apples rather joyfully, Rii giggled. "I found the horse version of you, Eldrin!" she informed him happily. She ran her hand up and down the window bars as she watched the horse with curiosity. The tall horse saw this and quickly ate a mouthful of oats before coming over to inspect her. He came right up to the window, his head fitting through the bars and investigating her thoroughly. Rii snickered. "I don't think I have anything of interest to you." But he was insistent, and finally he quickly and skillfully bit down on a tuft of hay stuck to her scales and speedily pulled away, making his escape to munch on the fresher hay that was in the loft. "I do believe I would take your kindred spirit," Rii informed Eldrin, watching as the horse continued to not sit still, whether it was swishing his tail repeatedly or throwing his head back and forth, nuzzling the ground some more. He didn't seem to be the most gentle of horses for healing, but his speed (if he could live up to his looks) would make reaching places for emergencies a breeze.
Yes, if she could she would have the horse in this stall. Too bad. She had made a deal with the owner already, and she doubted she could propose more healing checks just for this one horse.

"I do believe I would take your kindred spirit,"
Eldrin came down the row that Rii was on to observe her choice. He had a saddle thrown over his shoulder and a bridle and reigns in his hands. He watched the horse fidget and twitch. He had to be sure that she had chosen a good horse. After all, he didn't imagine that a literal fish out of water such as Rii would be incredibly knowledgeable about horses. For a while he observed the stallion, before deciding that it was approved. "Nice choice, but I'd watch that one. If he's truly my kindred spirit, then you should know to never fully trust him. But he'll have your back if things get messy..." Eldrin said, though it was quite an odd thing to say about a horse.
"Well then, if you'll just hold this," the thief said, handing the saddle and other gear to Rii. He slipped a lockpick out of his pocket and had the stall gate open moments later. Eldrin held the door open for Rii and gestured for her to outfit the horse with the saddle.
Outside, the sound of men's voices were heard near the far side of the corral. Angry and excited voices. Voices near the very spot that he'd left the horse from earlier. Eldrin chuckled as he recognized the voices. Scapegoats? Check.
"There is only one problem with dreams, my fishy friend. You cannot wield a dream, you cannot ride a dream, you cannot steal a dream, and you cannot live a dream. Dreaming is merely a tool for understanding what it is you need, what you want. And then you must capitalize on any opportunities given to you. And if there are no opportunities to capitalize upon, then make one." Eldrin walked through the stable as he spoke, unlocking exactly seven more horse's stalls. "Make your own opportunity... Claim your steed."

Rii said nothing in reply to Eldrin's advice. It was in part because she had just been handed riding gear, in part because Eldrin was now picking the lock to the stall that held the horse, but mostly because she found his advice to be rather ridiculous. She would never choose a horse entirely based on what he could offer as far as convenience. If she was going for that, she would have picked the mare one stall over who seemed to be around fourteen, a black and white paint that had woken with the talking and had stayed silent and walked over slowly and calmly to investigate. Yes, the horse would be good with sick people and would be patient while Rii was healing, and she looked beyond dependable and relaxed in all surroundings. But Rii had riden a few like that when she rode with groups. The simplest reason for why she wouldn't pick the mare was that she was familiar. And the spirited horse before her was not.
That's when she realized the stall was open, and she blinked her eyes multiple times, having lost herself in all the reasons she had come to already love this horse.
Eldrin was making it look like she needed to saddle up the horse. She wondered briefly why. Maybe he wanted to test it to see if it was as good as Rii believed? Shrugging, she slowly approached the horse, who saw the saddle and pricked his ears. He knew what it meant, and when she approached slowly he didn't back away. As she did so, she lost sight of what Eldrin was doing, but he was going on about dreams. She found it all interesting, but what caught her was the last sentence.
"Claim your steed."
What? "I... don't understand. Is he cheaper than I thought?" she asked Eldrin, whirling around sharply to see him walking along the aisle of the stable, unlocking other stalls.

Eldrin realized suddenly that he'd taken on a slightly fanatical air when he had been ranting about dreams and opportunities. This was gone in a moment, replaced with an easygoing smile as he answered Rii's question. "Much cheaper... Free. If you will take this one time offer," he answered. Yet, he finally decided to stop beating around the bush. She was obviously not getting the idea and, from the sound of the voices outside, they didn't have much time. "The Lon Lon Ranch has plenty of horses, though I would say none such as this one. I doubt that many will see in this fellow as much as you and I do. They would think him too deviant, and they would try to break him of this. Indulge yourself, save him. Steal the horse, darling." He said, swapping over to his usual use of endearing terms. He had just realized that he wasn't even talking like himself. Despite the fact that he was trying to trick her into stealing her horse for his own personal gain, he actually did want her to have it. He was beginning to see himself in the horse as Rii had earlier. This animal was wild and needed to be free, caging him in like this was nothing but torture. He thought of a few of the nights he had spent in the dungeons at Hyrule Castle and shuddered. Yet, he knew that due to his reckless nature, the stallion would need someone to guide and nurture it. Rii could provide that. He made sure to wake every horse in the stalls that he'd opened.

Rii was confused. The horse was free? Why would the owner just be offering horses for free?
But then Eldrin seemed to change his mind about something, and he started talking again. They would try and break the horse of his spirit. Rii frowned as she stared at the horse, reins still in hand. "Steal the horse, darling." Her frown grew deeper. She didn't want to take the horse away and make the owner sad. She had made a promise to perform health checks on all the animals. But it wouldn't afford her this horse. She'd drawn out a lot of her savings. But it wouldn't afford her this horse.
Finally she leaned her head against the horse's neck. "Do you want to go?" she asked. The horse turned his large head her way, then towards the open stall door, and began to walk forward, pulling her along. She cast another look down the stable to where Eldrin was. The horse wasn't happy here. He wanted to be free. He was a lot like Eldrin, and Rii got the feeling Eldrin wouldn't want to be in a cage. "Alright. Let's be free together," she whispered, and she tugged him out right to the opening of the stall. She put up a hand to signal that he wait, which he didn't seem to want to do, but she was using his stall door as a ladder in seconds before lunging for the support beam and hauling herself into the loft, grabbing her equipment.
She went down the same way as before, and the horse stilled when he felt her grip the saddle. She put her left foot in, hoisted herself up, and swung her other leg over so she was in the saddle. She ducked when they walked through the door, and the moment they were in the aisle she felt him tense as if to run. She pulled back slightly on the reins, telling the horse not to bolt just yet. She pulled out her wallet and set it on the stall door, knowing the rainbow of rupees inside wasn't enough. It made her feel sad. The horse was worth so much more, so much more than rupees could portray. Then she looked over at Eldrin. "You joining me up here, or do you have another plan?" she asked the red-eyed thief.

(Okay, this post is being made assuming that Max and Argoth have already met back up. So this is after an upcoming thread I still have to make. I guess we could also assume that Eldrin has met Argoth already as well)
"It would seem to me that he does," Argoth commented as he walked in the stable doors. "By the looks of the mob outside, they aren't happy. What did you do this time Eldrin?" his voice was both soft and amused.
Little Max had been climbing the nearby post to silently place himself in the rafters. His plan was genius, Eldrin would never see him coming.
"I hate to ruin your fun, but they're pretty much right outside." Once he had finished that he addressed the Zora woman on the horse. He had never seen this girl before and wondered how she knew Eldrin. He'd better introduce himself. "Hello there miss, who might you be? I see you have taken a liking to the thief," he finished walking over to Eldrin and swinging an arm around him. "Now, kid!"
"Gotcha!" Max yelled happily dropping from the ceiling. Giggles echoed all around the stable. The boy was headed straight for the thief, and this time, he was going to win their wrestle off they had every time they met.

"I've always got another plan, my scaly friend," Eldrin replied with a wink. The words had barely left his mouth when Maximus screamed "Gotcha!" and pounced on him from the rafters. Eldrin dodged the Max's initial attack and caught the young assassin's ankle. "Seems this here stable's infested! With human offspring..." He announced to Rii and Argoth, chuckling at Max's upside down face. When he decided that the boy had been disoriented enough, he flipped the young assassin upright and shifted his grip into a headlock. Holding Max off of the ground with this headlock, Eldrin continued what he was doing with his free hand. Though it looked as if he were suffocating Max, he was actually putting more pressure on the kid's chest than his throat.
Eldrin didn't release Maximus until he had completed his self-assigned task. When he was done, seven horses stood in the wide aisle outside their stalls, not including Rii's new horse. It was a seemingly random assembly of horses, but Eldrin had actually chosen them all specifically for a certain trait: anger. "So, who's gonna go with Rii to make sure she isn't followed, and who's going to help me make a mini stampede?"

When the man approached, Rii was curious that he was familiar with Eldrin. Upon the man's question, Rii laughed lightly, saying "Rii. I wouldn't call him a thief. I'd call him... a man who claims what he wants. Yourself?"
Then Maximus was falling from the ceiling and was colliding with Eldrin, who joked about the place being infested. "Maximus," Rii observed with a giggle. She was unfamiliar with her friends literally dropping in, but she rather liked it.
Eldrin then continued to release horses, and that's when Rii discovered his plan as she saw the horses he picked. He just happened to voice it when he said the words 'mini stampede'. "Are we parting ways?" Rii asked as the horse beneath her shifted, disappointment falling over her face momentarily. The stallion was very much like Eldrin. He saw open land, and he wanted it. It wouldn't take him long for him to claim it. She felt it wouldn't be hard to lose the people outside, but if someone was willing to go with her she held no reason to object. She could learn more about the man, or bond more with Maximus, who had been a pleasure to interact with last time.
The horse pawed at the ground, eager. She ran a hand down his neck to soothe him, and he let her momentarily.

Max giggled happily when Eldrin caught him, and once the headlock was over he said, "This isn't over yet, I'll get you!"
Argoth laughed when Eldrin evaded Max's move and commented, "You're gonna have to do better than that kid."
Upon hearing Eldrin's question Max immediately volunteered to join Rii, "Oh oh! I wanna go with Rii!" he jumped up and down as he said it, raising his hand like he was in class.
"Guess that leaves you and I for the stampede." Argoth added.

Eldrin smiled his crooked smile as they all spoke, slipping Rii's wallet into his pocket when no one was looking. When the others had decided what they were doing, Eldrin spoke again. "Ways must be parted for but a moment, if you can excuse me this one crime, Miss Rii," he replied, helping Maximus up into the saddle behind the Zora. "Remember the spot in Hyrule Field where you first met us? We'll rendezvous there."
The men outside had finally decided to get down to business. They finally crossed the corral and approached the stable doors cautiously. Before the leader had even touched them, the doors burst open. In a great thundering of hooves, horses flooded from the stable. Most of the men were knocked to the ground by the charging horses, others merely panicked and ended up getting trampled. At the back of the heard, Eldrin and Argoth ushered the angry horses forward. As the men's yelling and the din of the stampede filled the night, lights in the Ranch House began to ignite. Somebody was coming out to investigate. "Well then, I'd say that's our call to get lost..."
