Maximus stood at the edge of the Lost Woods, frowning. The cool night air briskly flowed over him in a nice breeze. All the trees moved gracefully in the wind as well, emitting a serenity that could not be matched anywhere else in Hyrule. The ever watchful moon loomed overhead, casting its dim light over the forest in a magnificent glow. No animals seemed to be present, no birds chirped, no rodents scuttled, no deer frolicked. Something must have been causing them to hide. Max ignored the fact; he had bigger issues to deal with. In his left hand he clutched a scroll but was not looking at it. He knew its contents, and that is what bothered him this night. So the young assassin stepped forth into the darkness of the forest, heading in the one direction he knew where to find what he was looking for.
Icylius sat in front of a small fire with his arms propped up on his knees. He let out a long sigh as he watched the flames lick the logs they were consuming. Nightmares had kept him up; otherwise he would be sleeping right now, or at least attempting. Even with the night as tranquil as had been in a long time, he still could not embrace the dream world. Icylius had thought that odd, no sounds came from the forest, not even the chirping of crickets. He couldn't remember when it started for he wasn't paying attention at the time. A bad feeling rested in the pit of his stomach and he connected it with the noiselessness of the forest around him. He hadn't seen any animals in quite some time either, only further adding to his suspicion. Icylius kept his eyes trained on his surroundings, raising his alertness for anything that might confirm his bad feeling.
Leaves and twigs crunched under Max's feet as he traveled farther into the Lost Woods. The darkness consumed the entire forest as the tops of the trees blocked out all of the moonlight. Max always liked the dark, easier to operate in. Plus he knew where he was going, so traveling in the dark didn't bother him at all. Then again, nothing really ever bothered the kid. Even though the scroll he was carrying was somewhat unnerving, he always knew what the right thing to do was. And when the time came he would have an answer. Maximus thought about his friends as he sauntered on through the forest. He really liked everyone he had met so far. Thanks to Argoth he had all the friends he could have ever wanted. Max thought Eldrin was the most fun, Kadina too. He really liked her. Blade and Torak were like father figures to him, just like Argoth had been. Although Max thought Torak was a little grumpier than everyone else in the organization, and thought he needed to lighten up a bit. Have some fun. Iona and Alemine he had only ever met about twice, but he thought they were very pretty and liked to be around them because Iona made him laugh, and Alemine was so shy every time he was around her he just wanted to go play and try and get her to come out of her shell. Mike wasn't really like that father figure type to him, more like that really cool friend you can always go to for advice. Azrael always reminded him of that old wise guy that says cool phrases that teach you lessons. He also thought Azrael needed to have some fun. He thought of Garen the same way as he did Mike, only he felt that Garen would go hang out with him and do fun stuff more than Mike would. Max had met Prince Lien and fought along side him a couple of times. He really wanted to go have fun with him sometime because it seemed like he never got to. And as for Icylius, Max couldn't stand that he didn't like people and sooner or later he was gonna make him by being the best friend he ever had. Just like Argoth.
As Max reminisced about all the memories he had with his friends he suddenly felt an uneasiness around him. He stopped for a moment, being completely still. "Hello. Maximus," a very familiar voice purred from directly over his right shoulder. Max's eyes widened and a sudden white hot anger raged through his entire being. Both of his arms morphed into massive, razor sharp blades instantly upon hearing the man's voice and he whipped them around in a blind fury. His blades sliced nothing but air. His eyes turned pure white and his teeth clenched together in pure anger and hatred.
Syrus was standing about ten feet away from the boy, his arms crossed over his chest. "You're lucky, kid. If it hadn't been for that bastard assassin you would still be by my side as the perfect weapon," Syrus sighed and the corner of his mouth twitched, "But things don't always go as planned. Sorry kid, but I'm gonna have to take you back with me again. I can't afford to let such a perfect specimen get away from me. And there is only so long you can tame that thing inside you. Soon you'll give in to it's bloodlust and all of your friends will have to kill you or be killed. You wouldn't want that would you? I can fix that. That beast won't ever surface if you come with me. None of your friends will get hurt I promise," He smiled menacingly after that and began speaking again, "So whaddya say Maxy, why don't you come with me and I can get that demon under control, huh?"
Max scowled at the man, every fiber of his being told him to lung for the kill, but he knew Syrus would just disappear. "If you ever speak of Argoth or my friends that way again, I'll rip your goddamn tongue out, understand?" It was clear that in Max's tone of voice that his anger level was at all time high, "I can deal with this demon by myself, I don't need your help. If I went with you, I would just be used, just like before. I'm not a moron Syrus, but you must be if you think I am going to come with you. Now get the hell out of my site before I rip your ass to shreds," Max retorted viciously.
"Tsk tsk, now Max, is that any way to speak to your elders? I knew you wouldn't come with me boy, I was just doing the right thing by asking first. Now, I'm not asking you anymore. You will come with me Maximus, I will have you."
"Like hell you will!" Max yelled and leaped forward, slashing violently at Syrus. His target immediately disappeared but Max was ready for it and he whipped back around slicing into...nothing. Dammit! He didn't appear behind me!
Syrus reappeared in the same exact spot, knowing the young boy would suspect him to appear behind him. He withdrew a syringe from within his trench coat and jabbed it into the boy's neck, releasing it's contents into his bloodstream.
Max's eyes widened in pure fear, No! I can't let him take me! he thought, his mind working overtime to find a solution to get out of this.
"I know what you are thinking little Max, and no, that isn't a sedative. It's a highly concentrated dose of something of my own design. It suppresses the demon inside of you so that you may no longer transform. I need you awake when I take you. Just not, a threat..hahaha," Syrus began laughing at Max as his hands shifted back to normal.
Oh no..no no. Crap I gotta get out of here! Max thought turning and sprinting in the opposite direction. He instantly ran straight into Syrus who had appeared in front of him just as he began to turn.
"There is no escape, kid. Just give up." Syrus reached down and grabbed Max by the collar and lifted him off the ground. "Now, shall we continue where we left off? Hahahahaha!" He threw his head back and laughed, and just as he was about to disappear something violent and heavy slammed into his chest. Syrus's grip on Max slipped and the boy fell to the ground, while Syrus himself was thrown about fifty feet in the opposite direction. He was traveling at such a high velocity that he began crashing through trees as he went.
"Here kid, let me help you up," Icylius said lending hand to Max. The young assassin grabbed onto him and pulled himself off the ground, "Thanks Icylius," Max said, smiling brightly up at him. "Who is that guy?"
"His name is Syrus, he is trying to capture me for his own personal gain. He did something to me so I can't shift anymore. And with his teleportation I am completely useless against him. Aagh dammit!"
"I see. He isn't gonna take you kid."
"It seems as though we have company, dear Max," Syrus chimed in, teleporting just in front of them. "Why have you come here, boy? Can't you see we are busy?"
"I'm not letting you take the kid," Icylius said bluntly.
"Oh, yes you are," Syrus retorted smiling like a maniac. The next second he was in front of Icylius, thrusting a hidden blade at his face. Syrus instantly stopped where he stood, the blade just resting on Icylius's forehead. A single drop of blood ran down his face. Icylius stared at him, and then thrust both fists into the man's chest exploding a psychokinetic wave with enough force to send him through the entire forest. Syrus jettisoned away from them at what seemed like the speed of light. The sound of trees smashing to the ground and splitting in half could be heard for miles.
"I don't think he'll be coming back, Max," Icylius said turning toward the little assassin.
"Thanks again Icylius, if you hadn't shown up I'd be in a lab somewhere right now," Max stated.
"Yeah. Why are you out here, kid?"
Max thought about if for a moment and then remembered the scroll he had come here with. He dug around in his pocket for it and withdrew it, "Why...do I have a contract for an assassination with your name on it..? Max asked, holding up the scroll to Icylius. The sun was beginning to rise behind him, pouring sunlight over the forest.
Icylius sat in front of a small fire with his arms propped up on his knees. He let out a long sigh as he watched the flames lick the logs they were consuming.
